Funniest fucking thing I've seen, and it's one of these:
Pulling over motorists for infractions on the freeway system here in Milwaukee.
Now, they've had these trucks on the roads for quite some time, and mostly they assist in accident/breakdown situations, as well as traffic control around lane closures, accidents, etc.
But yesterday, I saw one go after a Nissan Maxima that was coming off an on-ramp WAY too fast. I thought it was funny, and figured the driver must have done something really wrong besides speeding.
Then today, I see another one that had a car pulled over, this time on a carpool-only ramp, and they had stopped a car with a single occupant. I laughed, but then I see the Sheriff outside the truck, motioning to OTHER single occupant cars to join the first lady on the side of the road.
Yes, they are staffed by actual Sheriffs with full policing powers (I assume, online info is scarce), but to be used to actually stop traffic for breaking the law? Interesting.

A sheriff is a sheriff. It says so on the truck. Two birds with one stone, I suppose.

hiding in plain sight.....they are labeled as sheriff vehicles and it's not like you can hide them. I'd say it beats using automated systems since it is an officer making the call. On the plus side - in the event of an emergency that truck probably hauls a lot more equipment.

It was fun watching it go down the ramp WOT trying to catch the first guy. Probably got it up to 75ish I'd say.

Dane County, which includes Madison. So this seems to be a WI thing. TX DOT has a roadside assistance program, but they're not LEOs.

They remind me of that scene in Training Day....

An interesting vehicle - a hybrid, really. Combination of a pursuit car and a DOT/MoT emergency vehicle. For the small town sherriff, who presumably has a limited budget, it makes sense to combine the two.
It does fail as a pursuit vehicle compared to, well, the Lambo the Dubai police have, and some people will certainly try and succeed to outrun it, but figure that most people will in fact stop if a chase is initiated. For those who don't, you'd just radio for a traditional highway patrol car.

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't seen those trucks yet. BTW, sheriff's patrols on Milwaukee freeways seem way way down. They used to have one squad on each of the N, S, W freeways sitting for speeders. I hardly ever see them now. Funding, I assume?

I hardly ever see them on my commute ever, but recently have seen a few in the AM, but during rush hour never seemed like the perfect time to sit there and camp.
